“Trans people all over the country are doing crucial work with limited-to-no resources and yet they have had and continue to have such an impact on the lives of their community members. Listen to folx when they tell you the work they are doing is CRUCIAL and NECESSARY.” –Nicole Fernandes, 2020 Grantmaking Fellow
2021 marks TJFP’s ninth year of grantmaking, working with trans/gender non-conforming/non-binary leaders, and honoring the work of grassroots trans-led organizing and activism.
As our dedicated grantmaking fellows are hard at work reading and reviewing hundreds of applications, and as our facilitators prepare to guide our team through the difficult heart work of moving money, here’s a quick recap of what you helped TJFP achieve in 2020!
* Distributed $1 million dollars in grants towards 261 grassroots trans-led groups around the country and in US territories.
* Provided an additional $2,500 in unrestricted emergency support funds to each of our 261 grantees as they grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
* Gave each of our previous Grantmaking Panelists, Facilitators, and meeting support staff from the past 8 years $2,500 in unrestricted emergency support funds.
Thank you to all of our friends, family, and the entire trans justice community, for helping make this work possible each and every year! Let’s keep it up and keep on funding these brilliant trans futures!
Our goal in 2021 is to move $1 million dollars to grassroots trans-led groups around the country.
And we’re asking for your help to get us to our $90,000.00 goal!
“As we come together, our shape becomes larger and more expansive. There is room for you here. We will make room for you here. We will release any mindset of defeat and failure, remembering our power—yours and mine and, especially, our collective power: the power of our own communities to bring about change. So here we go, moving forward. Don’t stop, keep going.” – Gabriel Foster, Executive Director
Celebrating 9 years of supporting and trusting trans leadership!
In our ninth year of funding we’ve received 213 applications from groups around the country! And to date, TJFP has received 1,638 applications, given away 1,166 grants through our community-led process, and distributed more than $4.5 million dollars through our community-led process. It’s because of all of you who have provided so much community love and support that we are able get all this done.
Help us raise $90,000 before May 28th!
From $1 to $50,000, there’s no donation too big or too small. Every dollar you give will go directly to this year’s grantees. Each year the trans community is faced with enormous challenges and we have to remain committed to each other and our people. We have to support the work of trans-leadership and grassroots organizing.
These are just a few of the many groups we’ve funded in 2020.

What We Do and Why We Do It
The Trans Justice Funding Project (TJFP) is a community-led funding initiative founded in 2012 to support grassroots, trans justice groups run by and for trans people. We make grants annually by bringing together a panel of six trans justice activists from around the country to carefully review every application we receive. We center the leadership of trans people organizing around their experiences with racism, economic injustice, transmisogyny, ableism, immigration, incarceration, and other intersecting oppressions.
“Even though money was important at the time, the most important thing was to have our work validated, and no one can validate your work better than your own people. ” – Ruby Corado, Founder and Executive Director of Casa Ruby
Other Ways You Can Help
As a community, we have the ability to uplift and support each other in so many ways and this project is just one example in a long-history of community-led resistance and action. For folks not able to contribute through monetary donations, there are so many other ways to help. Right now, we’d be especially grateful for your help in spreading the word about this campaign!
