“It is my hope that our people have a fighting chance–that those of us that are able, continue to use our strengths to pursue life and ensure that all of us have a chance at the lives that we dream of.”

-Elle Hearns, 2016 Grantmaking Panelist

Dear friends and community,

The results of the elections are tragic and have shaken us to our core. Racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, misogyny, anti-semitism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression are swelling in this country and our communities are under attack.

Some of us may need some time to feel all of the feelings and take a pause. And some of us may need to mobilize and act quickly. No matter where you are, we ask along with us, please, do not lose hope. We have to keep moving forward, never backwards. We have to remember the strength and resilience of those who have come before us and remember we are not alone in this–we have each other. Our communities have always been and will continue to be brilliant activists, organizers, healers, educators, artists, truth tellers, resistors, and some of the most apologetically beautiful beings. We have pushed back and overcome immense challenges before and even though many of us are exhausted beyond belief, we’ve been called to fight like never before. We will continue this work, alongside one another because of love and for our survival.

This past year, TJFP has been able to move money quickly to over 100 grassroots trans justice groups around the country so that they can do the much needed work that will strengthen our communities. And this past month we had the pleasure of sitting with a handful of our Southern grantees and applicants on our From the Ground to the Sky Listening Tour. And another way we were able to support trans and gender non-conforming activists and organizers was through our collaboration with the Transgender Law Center, organizing the National Training Institute for TGNC organizers around the country. We couldn’t do any of this without your support, love, and energy.

May we show up for each other, even when it’s difficult, and keep each other safe as our journey takes us further along this path for collective liberation.

With so much love and gratitude,
Trans Justice Funding Project staff

From the Ground the the Sky Listening Tour: Southern Edition

TJFP hit the road once again on our From the Ground to the Sky Listening Tour. Over the past year and a half, we’ve been meeting with trans activists across the country to learn more about the work they’re doing and what kind of support they need. We’ve been welcomed by activists and organizers in Montana, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Arizona, Utah, Washington, California, Florida, and many other places. This past month we set out on a Southern tour, where we heard from activists in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisiana. We’re updating as we go so to learn more about some of the amazing trans justice groups in the South, keep up with us on social media and our website. [READ MORE]

“Trans Justice is fighting for the right to live authentically and to bring your whole self to any space… whatever that may look like.”

National Training Institute

Congratulations to all of the organizers who recently completed the National Training Institute in Orlando, Florida and St. Louis, Missouri. This training is a collaboration of the Transgender Law CenterTrans Justice Funding ProjectACLU and the GSA Network, that most recently brought together approximately 50 activists and organizers from around the country–primarily from the Midwest and Southeast regions–including several TJFP grantees. This intergenerational, largely people of color space for trans and gender non-conforming organizers was formed to connect trans leadership across the region and provide community building, breaking down how the legislation system works, power mapping and strategic planning as well as communication training. But at the center of it all, it’s essentially about growing people power and establishing a deeper network and support system of transgender and gender nonconforming leadership across the regions.

We’ve seen a lot of aggressive anti-trans legislation popping up across the country, and this is only the beginning. We’re working collaboratively to support the leadership of transgender and gender nonconforming people in states across the country to fight against these attacks. Since February 2016, the National Training Institute is about supporting leaders to build a sustainable national movement of TGNC communities fighting against discrimination and hate aimed at our people.

In preparation for what may be one of the most difficult political times for trans communities to date, our greatest strengths will be each other. It will be imperative in 2017 that TGNC communities and allies are ready for what’s ahead.

Congratulations to everyone who made this meeting in Orlando and St. Louis possible!

Funding a Movement of Trans Justice!

Trans Justice Funding Project has received so much community love and support in the form of volunteer hours, love notes, social media shout out’s, and financial donations. Over the past 4 years, TJFP has been able to move money to 194 grassroots, trans-led, trans justice groups across the country and it’s because of the support and generous donations from our community. In 2016 alone, we’ve given away over $200,000 to over 100 groups. Together we are funding a movement!

We want to say thank you to the generosity of folks who have pulled their coins together to support trans justice! TJFP has received donations from over 600 individuals and we are so thrilled to see our list of monthly donors growing. We’d like to acknowledge and send love to all of our supporters that wished to be recognized, who are helping us sustain our work–and a special shout out to all of our monthly donors!
